A folk percussion instrument born in West Africa. There are simply two spherical maracas connected by a single string, but played with both hands, they can manipulate extremely complex rhythms. It is believed to have originally been a toy made by African mothers for their children. In Africa, it was mainly used as a percussion instrument to accompany singing, but it became a small boom when it arrived in Japan in the early 1990s, and playing techniques have evolved dramatically.
